Colors of Brazilian tourist destinations

Our project was aimed to expose the gradation of colors observed in 65 Brazilian destinations, cited in Dados e Fatos (Facts and Figures), a Tourism Ministry website. Thus, a great opportunity to expand the understanding of Brazilian diversity, its many weather conditions and cultural manifestations.

We argue that by creating a color palette for each tourist destination in Brazil could be a starting point for a later research on image colors. Thereby, we begin to develop color palettes for each image, employing Processing.

The pictures of each location were extracted from Flickr. We created a algorithm that selects six pictures from each of the tourist destinations and organizes them horizontally with 100 pixels of height and width.
Then, the algorithm divides the original picture in 15 parts to seek the color from the central point of each sector of the grid. After that, the similar colors are organized to constitutes the color palette of the picture.

The future development of this project could include the palette optimization through decreasing redundancy in colors; the creation of a palette for each city and not for just one picture; the development of a interface that allows the user to navigate different cities, doing comparisons between then; and enlarge each photo
